  • Possible Worlds Theory: How the Imagination Transcends and Recreates Reality

The imagination is central to human social life but undervalued worldwide and underexplored in psychology. Possible Worlds Theory defines the forms and functions of imagination in diverse domains of social life.

  • Awe Sparks Prosociality in Children

Rooted in the novel and the mysterious, awe is a common experience in childhood, but research is almost silent with respect to the import of this emotion for children. In two preregistered experiments, we study the effects of art-elicited awe on children’s prosocial behavior toward an out-group and its unique physiological correlates.

  • Emotional Palette: A Computational Mapping of Aesthetic Experiences Evoked by Visual Art

Over millennia, humans have depicted a vast spectrum of emotions in art. We asked people to describe how 1,500 paintings make them feel and plotted these feelings on an interactive map, grouping artworks that triggered specific emotions. Explore this colorful map here: https://barradeau.com/2021/emotions-map/

  • The art of influence: When and why deviant artists gain impact

Some artists rise to fame, while others sink into oblivion. What determines whether artists make an impact? In 6 lab experiments we show that artists whose work deviates from their own previous style and other artists’ styles gain greater impact than nondeviant artists.
